Frequently Asked Questions

IN 1995 the trademark "Pyrex" owned by Corning Industries was sold to a Chinese company. Since then, no borosilicate glass has been put into Pyrex products. They have the right to do that because "Pyrex" is a brand name, and not the actual content of the material involved in the glass product. Glass makers that state their product is "like Pyrex" maybe selling plain Soda-Lime glass toys which in our opinion is very dangerous in sextoys, and we will not use Soda-Lime glass for any reason. Please make sure your manufacturer states that they are using borosilicate glass only.

LUCITE GLASS

Lucite is a trademark for a company that uses acrylic plastic. Lucite has never been any form of glass other that to look similar. It is plastic.

I have a great sexual partner, why do I need any sex toys?

It is our nature to explore our mates. If you and your partner have more than one sexual position you use, you are already exploring. Toys are just an extension of exploring. There are serious reasons to use toys; impotence is one, as our mates continue to have needs that we would like to continue to satisfy. Remember the Golden rule of toys " Do unto others as you want them to do to you". If you do something special for your partner, you will both feel better, and it keeps the action at home. Another reason to use our toys is that we don’t all get off at the same time. For a man, continuing with intercourse after ejaculation is not usually an option. Your mate needs just a few more minutes or seconds to get where you are, but the wood is turned to sawdust for the moment. A warm glass sex toy near by can help you bring your encounter to a satisfying time for you both. As the giver you can concentrate exclusively on your mates response. If something you do works especially well, You both have that treat to look for again, with variations. This provides us with more intimate knowledge of each other, making us better sexual partners.

Why do the photographs have lines in them and do they come that way?

Since all of glass is made from pure clear Boronex® it is somewhat difficult to photograph. We use stripped reflective screens so that you can see and appreciate the form and shapes. None of our glass will come with strips.

Top of page

Why are the Juicer® and Clingon becoming so popular?

The design is so different than anything in the prior art. They are very intimate and intense. These shapes, with proper heat, attack your senses like no vibrator. It is a more natural orgasm brought on by more natural stimulation. Lubrication is different, as the entire toy needs lube, especially the handles of the Juicer® for ease of rotation.

I want to resell your products, what are my options?

Aside from our retail presence, we offer an affiliate program to other web masters that pay a 25% commission. Stores can purchase from us at 50 % of retail. Distributors call for prices and further discounts for large purchases. We are great people to work with and have a very high business ethic. We go out of the way to make people happy. Contact us for Reseller pricing.

As a store owner, why would I want to buy "non scheduled obsolescence" sex toys?

Scheduled obsolescence items are expected to break in a predetermined time or number of usages causing the toy buyer to return to buy the same item again. Even though this has worked for decades it has always returned an unhappier buyer. It has not made a loyal customer base. Glass buyers usually return to buy new shapes and have told all their friends about a store they found.

Why GLASS?

A popular adult star asked me "why would I want anything that hard in me"? I replied "I have seen a couple of your films and I don't ever remember you yelling SOFTER, SOFTER, SOFTER!!!".

The most important factors in well made glass toys are slickness, smoothness, and affective shapes. With almost any lube your soft tissues never actually touch the glass, no tissue issues like friction or irritation. Hardness is a requirement so you can feel every slick curve as we designed it. Rubber, plastic and acrylic always manage to push through lubes and cause distraction and discomfort. All of our special products depend on "SLIPPERY ". Knowmind® Ent. is the undisputed leaders in affective shape technology or as we call it Sexnology®.

Rubber, Acrylic , and Plastic toys, plasticisers, or what we call "RAP", can have chemical, or allergic reactions. Popular lubes don't work well with "RAP" and cause painful and harmful tissue tugging-tearing or toxic ingestion. All water based lubes provide excellent slickness and last longer with glass.

Properly flame polished and annealed glass has no pores in it for bacteria, dirt, and germs to hide, and it is so strong that we have driven several cars and vans over our toys without leaving a mark.

SHAPE is the key to making a great feeling glass sex toy. Proper design has always been our highest priority. Our first penis dildos just had a nicely rounded head with little detail. Then our Research and Development team was formed. Soon we were making realistic penis heads that felt even better than our earlier model. This produced better orgasms since it massaged the G-spot area more intensely. Many users have experimented with different lubes and seem to agree that there is no bad lube, only different sensations. Our Asstroknot® Popper series has special spacing between the balls and the first ball is tapered for easier insertion. The Clingon, Juicer®, and the Joystick all went through many changes as the R&D team helped us perfect them.

With quality glass, you have control of how long it will last. Most sex toys on the market have an average life of about 3 months. If you take good care of your glass toys they will last 3 to 4 thousand years.

Who originally made glass sex toys

Glass sex toys have been used in fertility rite ceremonies and other ceremonies for more than 2000 years. KnowMind® Ent. was the first to offer glass sex toys to the adult industry starting in 1997. We had the glass sex toy industry to ourselves for the first three plus years. When we appeared on HBO® REAL SEX®#27 Jun 04 2001 at 1:45am, we got up the next morning we were sold out and back ordered for the next two months. Every day after that put us further into back order. Attempting to get caught up, we missed several trade shows. Several "bong" manufacturers showed up, taking advantage of our absence. Since then most of the pipe makers have switched to glass toys. The range of quality and safety in these products varies widely.

Top of page

Are glass dildos safe to use?

First, they can be sterilized between uses or partners. Second, they are non-porous. Glass toys don't absorb chemicals so they can't leach chemicals in to the body. Traditional toys(rubber and plastic) are ALL sold as novelties only. This is to avoid liability as these products have been shown to leak toxins into the body that have been linked to health problems from yeast infections to CANCER.

Will your glass Chip or Break?

All sex toys break one way or another.

We have never seen or heard of chipping happening with OUR products. It doesn't surprise us that people are concerned about chipping, as we have seen other toy makers placing veins and bumps that have not been well sealed together and could come off too easily. It is expensive in craftsman time and fuel to do them correctly. When we do our trade shows we would take a 1 1/2 inch dildo and would pound 10 penny nails clear through a 2 X 4 plank. Near the end of a show we were taking our last nail home in the 2 by 4 and the whole board and nails exploded, flying everywhere. The dildo was the only thing that didn't get hurt. I caught a nail in the forehead causing a small bleed, and we don't do that demo anymore. We put over 500 nails in 3 pieces of wood. Two of the planks shattered do to stress. We used the same dildo for all five hundred nails and you could barely see 7 small scratches that could not be felt. We still have the dildo and show people at the trade shows. As for most of the Rubber, acrylic, and plastic toys if it didn't come out of the over glitzy packaging broken, its life expectancy is usually short anyway. Our glass products have never broken in use. If any toy is dropped on a hard surface you run the risk of breaking it. With a little care our glass sex toys could last 3 to 4 thousand years. Dave has a piece glass that is 33 years old and it still looks as good and works as well as the day it was discovered. None of his other non-glass collection of toys made it even close.

How can I test my current toys for toxins?

If you are wondering about your current toys safety, clean your unused toy, put it gently on your tongue and let it sit there for about one minute, remove it, and taste your mouth, has it changed? Even pure stainless steal has a galvanic reaction like licking a nickel, this is the same reaction that goes on in a battery. If so, there was a chemical reaction to the plasticisers going on and not the taste you really wanted. If it reacts in your mouth, think what it will do to your other end. This test may not detect all toxins, and toxins may still exist with little or no taste in some synthetic materials. Unfortunately, this test can not tell the difference between good and bad glass. Hospitals have been using safe, strong, borosilicate glass objects inside the body for decades.

Why Knowmind® Asstroknots®Reg made with Sexnology®?

We design all of our toys ourselves, with a lot of help from our research and development team. These are normal everyday people, not from the adult industry, that have active sexual curiosity. During testing we have three video cameras close up on the subject with professional lighting. We film and check each toy in use for fit, size, and comfort. We adjust lengths, angles and size until we have created the optimum response from the users of each toy. The CLINGON, for example, has gone through more than eighty changes in four years to get the shape and size just right. Some of our competitors have tried to duplicate our products and not infringe on our patents. In many cases they have rendered them nearly useless. Even if you find someone saving you 5 or 10 dollars, if it doesn't do the job it is just a waste of money. Don't let colored glass fool you, it adds nothing to functionality. Steve and I were just looking at a toy from another company, it is anal and vaginal and it won't even fit into a woman. We made the same mistake but after testing, we realized it and never put it on the market. It took us another year to get it right.

How many years experience in designing and making glass sex toys?

We have been designing and manufacturing borosilicate glass sex toys since 1997. We were the first to bring this idea to market. Their have been many who have tried to copy our designs and have failed miserably. Selling glass that just will not work correctly, and for only a little less money. Many of our products are very different, and sizes are available in some products. These factors make us the leader in the manufacturer of unique and useful glass sex toys. Many people have bought the entire set after trying one or two pieces and have an open subscription to the latest new toys.

What is Boronex®

Boronex® is the trademark for Knowmind's borosilicate glass. Boronex provides superior strength, and clarity. It contains no plasticisers.

Why have our products gone down in price?

Update 06/2012
A few years ago we were reluctantly pressured by many other glass toy companies to look at Chinese glass. We were surprised to find very high quality and workmanship, much higher than previous. It is true if you want the cheapest stuff, China is your place. If you are willing to pay more, high quality and great finish work are right around the corner. No thanks to China, but their beach sand is the finest in the world to make glass products. Add oxide of Boron and you have the clearest, purest, tearless, cleanest, clear diamond colored borosilicate glass. So good that NASA got an exemption from having to use US made boro glass windows in the Space Shuttle in favor of Chinese boro glass instead. We are currently looking at ceramic castings with a glass fire glaze and many new ways to manufacture a high quality product reasonable products.
Update 01/2002
We started making everything in the USA using several premiere scientific glass makers. These experts demand $75 to $150 an hour for labor. Our prices had to reflect that cost. In the last year we have found some of the top European glass artists to produce our products. The glass quality has improved and the workmanship is excellent. In addition, the labor cost is much less, so our prices have come down 50% or more in some cases due to this savings.

Why don't you have any colored glass?

Recently other glass toy manufacturers have begun speaking on behalf of the the FDA or Food and Drug Administration . They wishfully believe that colored glass would fall under the guide lines that allow similar drugs or materials to be used for different medical purposes without further FDA approval. These guide lines do not allow chemicals that are normally poison or toxic and not already in the original product to be added to an already approved material without additional testing. FDA requires independent testing and can cost about 500,000,000 dollars. Our scientific glass makers are capable of making gorgeous colored toys but, they all said they are less safe. Colored glass has chemicals mixed in it to make the color such as:

iron oxides for greens or browns
manganese oxides for deep amber or amethyst
cobalt oxide for deep blue
gold chloride for ruby red
selenium compounds for reds
carbon oxides for amber/brown
mix of manganese and cobalt and iron for black
antimony oxides for white
uranium oxides for yellow green (glows!)
sulfur compounds for amber/brown
copper compounds for light blue or red
tin compounds for white
lead with antimony for yellow

Do you want any of these chemicals in you?
Some of these chemicals are so dangerous that they are illegal to dispose of in your home garbage in all fifty states. If you broke one of these, it would have to be taken to a legal toxic dump site and you would be charged a fee for disposal. Each different color represents glass which can expand and contract at different rates and temperatures causing internal stress which can cause glass to break. Many glass sex toy makers have discontinued anealing or heat treating their glass because of the high rate of breakage during the process. Cold and heat can cause them to break easily. A Polariscope can be used to test the glass to see if it has been properly anealed and all stress removed. You can test your glass toy at home if you have a flat screen computer monitor and polarized sunglasses. Sit in front of the monitor and bring up Notepad or any white background screen, make the screen as bright as possible. Put on your glasses, look directly into the screen and lean your head either left or right until the screen turns to its darkest point or looks like it is turned off. Place the glass toy between your glasses and the screen. Properly anealed glass will have an even coloration through out the piece or some monitors an even shade of gray. While you are viewing, while holding the piece at both ends, put your thumbs at a mid point, as if to bend the glass, and put a little pressure with the thumbs you will see induced stress. This is not what you want in glass when there is no pressure on it. Clear Boronex has uniform expansion and contraction and doesn't have this problem. The four biggest borosilicate glass manufactures (like Corning Pyrex®) have discontinued making colored borosilicate glass long ago. Smaller companies have emerged to make colored glass, their concerns are for intense and beautiful colors, not safety concerns for internal use. Most clear borosilicate glass is considered medical grade, colored is not. For safety, colored glass should be used for ornamental glass only. We are constantly looking for new ways to make these products and we are keeping an eye out for adding color safely. What do colored glass and a nuclear bomb have in common, just because you can do it, doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Why not make your toys in Stainless Steel?

All stainless steel is an alloy which means it is comprised of several metals. Stainless steel in cookware, surgical instruments, handguns, marine parts are different combinations of metal. True surgical stainless steel contains no iron to avoid rust and is very difficult and expensive to machine and polish. That is why a single threaded screw used in surgery may cost $100.00 and look like the 10 cent version in the hardware store. If you put the metal object on your tongue you will notice an immediate sour taste. That is the nickel in the alloy, the taste is a galvanic reaction, much like the chemical reaction inside a battery. Iron is added to stainless steel to make it easier to machine and less expensive. This type of stainless steal has a very porous surface and will eventually rust, leaving a hard to clean surface.

Why don't you use American glass makers?

Update 06/2012
Please read above about our recent change to the Chinese.
Update 01/2002
We do, but only for initial design work and refinement. It is cheaper on a single R&D piece to avoid customs, customs agent fees, and lengthy shipping times. The art of glass making originated in Scandinavia and Europe long before there was an America. We are using the original experts with the most experience. All glass makers in the USA have learned, or are only one or two generations away from learning what they know about lampwork or glass blowing from the Europeans and the Scandinavians. Borosilicate glass was developed and perfected in Europe.

What is Dichroic glass and do you use it?

Dichroic glass is a high-tech spin-off of the NASA space industry. "Dichroic" is defined as the property of having more than one color, especially when viewed from different angles or from transmitted to reflected light. Dichroic coated glass is produced by a process called "thin film physics" and is generally referred to as a color separator. Usually found in 2 or more layers to give spectral color displays or light filters. It's normally used as an interference filter in scientific measuring or correcting applications. To get this effect, thin layers of metallic oxides or "rust", such as iron, titanium, silicon, and magnesium are deposited upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace. Metal oxides are forms of rust. No where at NASA does it say that this material is safe for insertion into humans. Cleaning of dichroic glass states that chemicals or water based cleaners can get into the metal oxide layers and cause chemical reactions an separation problems. No we do not use dichroic glass in any of our products.

When glass is sealed ( joined ) together what should I look for?

When two or more pieces are joined together there should be a smooth curve at all meeting places. Any glass that meets at or near 90 degree angles sharply could break easily. This is called "bad re-entrant angle". Also look for debris in the sealing this could weaken the item. Sealing is used to put on bumps, veins, knobs, and joining major differences in shapes. The rule of thumb is if you slide your fingernail across the sealed glass, it should not stop, but slide with the curve. We have seen many poor sealings in other peoples work. These additions can easily come off leaving sharp edges behind and loose glass. Smoothing these curves requires more craftsman time and fuel to properly flame polish.

Top of page

Why is Fire Polishing important?

After Boronex® glass has been made to shape, it has marks, unwanted bumps, blemishes, and sharp edges. While the glass is still very hot a torch is carefully passed over all areas. This is were the lampworker waves his magic. Like a carpenter using fine sand paper to finish fine furniture, the glass flows like honey. Gravity is used with flame to change the size of items on the surface. Flow causes sharp edges to sink like quicksand never to be seen again. Boronex® and Expert Fire Polishing are found in all Asstroknots®

How about a vibrator in glass?

To put a vibrator in glass you would have to insert it into some form of hollow glass. Hollow glass is not as strong and solid glass. We will not make these, as we do not consider them safe.

Top of page

Are you against Vibrators?

Vibration is just low frequency heat, if you want the ultimate in vibration, try heat. Heat supplies great natural orgasmic enhancement without the concussion and damage. Vibrators force orgasms unnaturally. Vibration is a form of shock. When people die from a violent trauma the medical examiners usually finds orgasmic fluid secretions. Do we think they had a great time dying? I think not.

People that operate jackhammers and heavy equipment that produce shock, loose sensation and feeling after awhile, not to mention early arthritis and other medial problems. Many women loose feeling in that area and with long term use, and can't have an orgasm without the vibrator ( Vibrator Queen ). This leaves the pelvic floor muscle group weak and can cause problems later in life with incontinence and other medical problems.

Vibrators work because they shock the area so much that the body actually says, "please stop" by having an orgasm. After the orgasmic process is over the body just wants to recover and rest. The shock-orgasm cycle resets. Naturally produced orgasms such as with a partner create warmth and slower motion than with a vibrator, which exercise the pelvic floor muscle group, improving future sexual response.

For vibrator users that want to convert to glass we suggest the Juicer. It produces a lower frequency motion and can help transition the "Vibrator Queen" back to natural orgasms. Devices like our Clingon utilize warmth and muscle coordination to produce a more natural orgasm. Most of our accomplished users say the orgasm and fantasy is more intense than vibration or shock. This can also help people with incontinence problems in the future.

Why don't you have Pretty Liquid filled glass toys?

The liquid expands and contracts at different temperatures as solid glass. This can cause pressure or vacuum inside causing a constant stress in the glass. And again, they are made with hollow glass tube with an unannealed plug to hold the liquid in. We do not make these either, as we do not consider them safe. Glowing liquids can use a form of uranium, not in my body.

Top of page

Is it safe to heat, cool, or freeze glass?

It is safe to heat or freeze our Boronex®toys. Heating is simple, from, running it under desirable water temperature to, acquiring the smallest plastic container that you can lay the toy in and pour hot water just over the top of the toy. Be careful not to over heat the toy. A micro wave will only heat the water not the glass. After just two minutes the toy can be removed, dried, lubed and WOW. It can be left in the water for up to another 20 minutes and still have great deep heat. Always hold the toy in your hand for a moment to test the temperature. Cooling and freezing are safest with "CLEAR" Boronex® or solid," CLEAR" borosilicate glass. Recently we spoke to many very satisfied customers and found that most of them had not tried to heat a toy. Were they just complacent with cold toys? No, they were still enjoying the smoothness of glass. Later we heated up a few and watched their eyes roll. Oh well, still more to discover about glass.

Top of page

How should I store the toy?

Once it has been used it should be cleaned with at least warm water and anti-bacterial soap, dried, and returned to its velvet case. Be very careful when you wash the toy, nothing is more slippery than glass, soap, and water. Get a good grip on it and hold it low in the washing basin.

Top of page

What type of lubrication and how much should I use?

Any lube works great, water based lubes work very well and are easier to clean off. Because Asstroknots® are non-porous, a little lube goes a long way. Juicers and clingons require a small but full coating of lube. The Juicer needs lube for the cone shaped base and handle-indent side to operate properly. People tell us that they are finding clever ways to heat the lube so as to get a perfect temperature, like adjusting the speed on a vibrator. Once you get it right, its JUST RIGHT.

Top of page

What is the correct heating process after manufacture?

All sex toy glass must be ANNEALED after forming. This process can take up to 24 hours depending on thickness in an oven at temperatures as high as 1080 degrees Fahrenheit. Glass that has been hardened or tempered have been made incorrectly. Many glass sex toy makers have discontinued anealing or heat treating their glass because of the high rate of breakage during the process. Extreme cold and heat can cause them to break easily. Clear Boronex doesn't have this problem.

Where are the Sexy Women?

We are not in the pornography business, but rather the enhancement of sexual enjoyment, and safe sex business. We stress the beauty of our products and their unique function. There are 1000s of sites for lust and sex, but we stress the value of our products. How many times have you purchased an adult product with a "star" on the box, beautiful printing, and very seductive, only to find out the the toy inside didn't live up to the packaging. We have had several stars that wanted to be our spokesperson. Some of our competitors need beautiful girls to distract you from noticing the lack of quality and functional imagination in their products.

What is the difference between Glass Blowers and Lamp workers?

The loose generic term for glass maker is glass blower, but what we do is Lamp work. Glass blowing is done with a long tube and air is blown into very hot glass creating a hollow vessel. This process differs drastically from an experienced lamp worker. A lamp worker uses solid glass (in our case, Boronex®)and works it over a 2500 degree torch, usually with a lathe to form shapes. The glass must then be annealed to regain its original strength.

Do you have strap ons

We don't make strap-ons, but we have been told that the penis dildos with the large base will work with some currently available strap-on systems.
